Questions readers ask

Do Ozempic and Rybelsus contain the same medicine?

Yes, both are semaglutide from Novo Nordisk for type 2 diabetes. Ozempic is a once-weekly injection with a 2.0 mg maximum, while Rybelsus is a daily oral tablet with a 14 mg maximum.

Why is the Rybelsus dose so much higher than the Ozempic dose?

Rybelsus is swallowed rather than injected, so its pharmacokinetics differ and much of the dose is not absorbed. It uses an absorption enhancer called SNAC, which is why tablet doses of 3, 7 and 14 mg are needed.

How do I take Rybelsus correctly?

Take Rybelsus on an empty stomach with no more than 120 mL of water, at least 30 minutes before food or any other oral medication. Ozempic, being an injection, has no such timing rule.
